Google Temporarily Suspends AI Tools Amid Historical Inaccuracy Scandal

Google has temporarily suspended its AI tools following a scandal regarding historical inaccuracies that triggered significant backlash from the public. This development represents the latest setback in the Alphabet-owned company's quest to remain competitive against rivals such as OpenAI and Microsoft.

Earlier this month, Google introduced image generation capabilities through its Gemini AI model. However, in recent days, several users on social media highlighted instances where the model generated historically inaccurate images. Examples included depictions of Vikings, knights, founding figures of the United States, and even Nazi soldiers with people of different races.

Artificial intelligence programs like Gemini learn from available information, often replicating biases inherent in society. While Google aimed to address discrimination, it may have overcorrected, leading to unintended consequences.

"We acknowledge that Gemini offers inaccuracies in some historical image generation," Google stated on Wednesday (21/2/2024).

Since the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT in November 2022, Google has been striving to develop AI software that matches the capabilities of its competitors. However, past incidents, such as inaccuracies in promotional materials for the generative AI chatbot Bard, have resulted in negative repercussions for the company.

Jack Krawczyk, Senior Product Director for Gemini at Google, acknowledged the need for adjustments, particularly concerning historical context. Google has temporarily suspended its AI tools to address these issues and ensure greater accuracy moving forward.
