Xiaomi Removes Background Video Playback Feature Following Google's Pressure

Xiaomi, the prominent Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has recently faced pressure from Google, leading to the removal of a popular feature from its phones. The feature in question allowed users to play videos in the background with the screen turned off, a functionality highly appreciated by many consumers.

Initially available on Xiaomi's HyperOS, the capability for background video playback has been discontinued by Xiaomi in response to warnings from Google. Although the option still exists within MIUI 12, Xiaomi has opted to phase it out gradually after Google's intervention.

Despite being originally intended for premium users, the background video playback feature was accessible to all users, including those without a premium subscription, particularly on applications like YouTube. However, Xiaomi's decision to comply with Google's directives means that users will no longer have access to this feature.

Reports from Gizmochina suggest that Xiaomi will implement the removal of this feature through subsequent updates to its video toolbox, which was previously lauded for its utility and was incorporated into MIUI 12.

With the introduction of MIUI 15, or HyperOS, users will find that the option to play videos with the screen off has been eliminated entirely. Those desiring this functionality will now need to subscribe to YouTube Premium.

Furthermore, Xiaomi has announced that users upgrading their security app to the mentioned version on MIUI 12 and above will also lose the ability to play videos with the screen off. While this decision may disappoint some users, Xiaomi asserts that it is imperative to adhere to Google's policies.

The removal of this feature underscores Xiaomi's commitment to compliance with Google's guidelines, despite its implications for user experience. Regrettably, users have limited recourse to circumvent this decision, highlighting the significant impact of platform policies on device functionalities.
